This is a letter I received from Tim Jordan, who was a Commander in the Navy at the time, March 19, 2006. I had asked Tim if he could find out information on Admiral Hewitt and this was the letter in reply to that request. James W. Cheevers, the Associate Director and Senior Curator at Annapolis statement is well worth keeping on record. The comment he makes at the end listing Admiral Hewitt’s accomplishments also helps us
to understand why in part we in the city of Hackensack may never have heard of the Admiral. James Cheevers writes, “It is generally thought by naval historians that Admiral Hewitt accomplished as much and more during his long naval career, particularly during World War II in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, than his contemporaries, but he was a very modest and humble man and was upstaged by the naval leaders of the Pacific campaigns who received better press during the war and more historical coverage after the war.”
